Chabad Jewish Center of North Alabama - High Holidays

DPPJ

Since Rabbi Berkowitz and his family moved to the Tennessee Valley and established the Chadab Jewish Center of North Alabama, they have not only been a tremendous blessing to the local Jewish community, but have also made great effort to reach out and build relationship with the local Christian community. If you or your congregation have a desire to honor or bless Israel and the Jewish people, partnering or giving at special times to help the Chabad Jewish Center of North Alabama is a unique opportunity to do so right here in the Tennessee Valley!

High Holidays: Birth and New Beginnings

The High Holidays are approaching.

Beginning with Rosh Hashanah (Sep. 28-30), the Jewish New Year, a day that the Torah calls "…a remembrance of Israel through the Shofar blast, a Holy occasion." (Leviticus 23:24-25) and culminating with Simchat Torah (Oct. 19-21) "On the eight day, it shall be a holy convocation for you…It is a day of detention." (Leviticus 23:36)

This period in the Jewish calendar is of paramount significance for the myriad opportunities we have to celebrate and worship G-d's greatness.

At Chabad of North Alabama, we are marking our first anniversary of our life-long mission of inspiring and raising awareness of these holy gifts that G-d has bestowed upon the Nation of Israel, to educate and encourage the Jewish community to celebrate and practice their heritage and faith, and to be "a light unto the nations" as the prophet Isaiah said. We are bringing these biblical mandates bestowed upon the Jewish people to the forefront, right here in our very own community.

The Love of G-d, The Love of Torah and The Love of Israel is our calling.

We turn to you with this great opportunity of partnering with us in support, and enabling us to continue our divine mission of "filling the world with the knowledge of G-d."

Shalom and a Happy New Year!
Rabbi Laibel Berkowitz

One Sunday afternoon in September, during his weekly tradition of distribution of dollars to charity, the Lubavitcher Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson 1902-1994, spiritual head of the Chabad Lubavitch movement) was asked by a Jewish reporter from the New York Times "what is your message for the Jewish New Year?" The Rebbe turned to the photographer that accompanied the reporter (who was a gentile) and wished her a "Happy New Year!" The Rebbe explained that Rosh Hashannah is the birthday of Adam, thus the New Year for all mankind. He encouraged each and every individual to utilize this time for self reflection and spiritual rejuvenation by recognizing that this moment is the anniversary of man's purpose here on earth; to bring the light of G-dliness into the world.
